A sun-facing collector heats a fluid that flows through a storage tank, keeping the water warm for future use. SWH systems may be active (requiring a pump) or passive (relying on natural convection). They may heat only water or both water and another working fluid, directly or via light-concentrating mirrors, and can function as standalone units or as hybrids alongside electric or gas water heaters.

A solar cooker is a device that uses direct sunlight to cook, heat, or pasteurize food and beverages. Many solar cookers are simple, low-tech devices, though some have the power and sophistication comparable to conventional stoves. Large solar cookers can prepare food for large groups. Because solar cookers operate without electricity and are cost-effective, several non-profit organizations promote their use worldwide to reduce fuel costs and air pollution and help curb deforestation and desertification.
