What is the difference between epimers and anomers?

Hint:Stereoisomers are pairs of compounds that share the same chemical formula but differ in their spatial arrangement. Stereoisomers that vary in the configuration at only one chiral carbon atom are called epimers, while those that differ in the configuration at the acetal or hemiacetal carbon are known as anomers.

Understanding Epimers and Anomers in Detail:

Epimers:

Epimers are a type of stereoisomer pair that differ in the configuration around just one chiral carbon, meaning they vary at only one stereogenic center. In epimers, any other stereocenters in the molecules (if present) remain identical in both members of the pair.  

Examples of epimers include:

Galactose and Glucose.

Anomers:

Anomers are a specific type of epimer, differing in the configuration specifically at the acetal or hemiacetal carbon, as mentioned above. Unlike typical epimers, anomers are always cyclic structures, while general epimers can be either cyclic or acyclic.  

Examples of anomers include: 

α−D−Fructofuranose and β−D−Fructofuranose.

Note:Epimers are referred to as enantiomers when there is only a single stereocenter, while they are called diastereoisomers when there is more than one stereocenter. It’s important to note that anomers are a specific type of epimer, as both are stereoisomers with differences in specific configurations.
